Consumer product and technology companies are improving their energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as they face a recession and impending climate legislation, according to a report issued Dec. 11 by an interest group promoting sustain-ability.rnThe report commissioned by Ceres Inc., a coalition of investors, environmental groups, and public-interest groups headquartered in Boston, assessed 63 consumer products and technology companies-48 of which are based in the United States-on a range of performance measures including corporate governance with regard to climate change, reduction of emissions in various levels of manufacturing and distribution, and real estate footprint.rnThe analysis covered 11 industry sectors. Each company was judged by measures reflecting their sources of emissions. The sectors examined were "big box" retailers, grocery and drug stores, restaurants, apparel, beverages, personal and household goods, technology, Pharmaceuticals, real estate, travel and leisure, and semiconductors.
