European Parliament Gives Final Approval To Far-reaching Climate Protection Strategy

BRUSSELS-European Parliament lawmakers approved six measures Dec. 17 setting out the European Union's climate protection strategy through 2020.rnThe legislation set binding targets for production of renewable energy by EU member states, rules for operating the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) after 2012, and mandatory emission reduction goals for parts of the European economy not covered by the ETS. Lawmakers, sitting in Strasbourg, France, also backed laws regarding carbon dioxide emissions from cars, pollution from fuel production and use, and carbon capture and storage.rnThe legislation will become effective once it has been formally adopted by the EU Council, a process expected to be completed quickly.
