Epa Orders California Water Systems To Cut Arsenic Levels In Drinking Water

The Environmental Protection Agency Oct. 28 ordered 11 public water systems in California to reduce arsenic levels in their drinking water supplies to meet the federal standard of 10 parts per billion. Under the enforcement actions, each of the water systems has until 2010-four additional years beyond the 2006 compliance date-to reach the Safe Drinking Water Act standard for arsenic, or face penalties of up to $32,500 a day for each violation. The orders mark the first major effort in California to enforce the 10 ppb maximum contaminant level for arsenic that took effect Jan. 23, 2006 (36 ER 2513, 12/9/05).
