New San Francisco Bay Area Rule Targets Wood-burning Fireplaces, Stoves

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District adopted a rule July 9 to reduce harmful emissions from wood-burning fireplaces, stoves, and outdoor fire pits. Similar to measures other California air districts have adopted, the rule restricts the use of residential wood-burning devices on days when high levels of fine par-ticulates (PM-2.5) are forecast during the winter months, from Nov. 1 through Feb. 28. There could be as many as 20 days during the period where wood-burning could be banned, according to the agency's rulemaking documents. Up to 30 percent of the wintertime particulate pollution in the Bay Area has been linked to wood-burning, according to the BAAQMD.
