The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved a bill Nov. 19, by a 34-12 vote, that would prohibit importation of low-level radioactive waste into the United States.rnThe Radioactive Import Deterrence Act of 2009 (H.R. 515), or "RID Act," would restrict the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's authority to license importation of low-level radioactive waste.rnA Utah company's application to import 20,000 tons of waste from Italy prompted Reps. Jim Matheson (D-Utah), Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.) and Lee Terry (R-Neb.) to introduce the RID Act in January. It cleared the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment on Nov. 3 (40 ER 2571, 11/6/09).
