BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. has agreed to pay $1.7 million in civil penalties and make improvements to storage tank containment areas to settle violations of Alaska's oil spill prevention regulations, officials from the Alaska Department of Law and Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said Sept. 22.rnThe violations concerned secondary containment areas-the lined, berm-bordered catchment sites that are designed to hold oil in the, event of spills-but not any actual spills, Assistant Alaska Attorney General Breck Tostevin said.
