New York Agency Launches Green Hotel Program

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Sept. 22 announced the Green Lodging Certification program to certify and to rate hotels and lodging establishments based on their environmental performance. Under the program, participating hotels will be rated on a scale of one to five, using green credentials certified by the Audubon Green Leaf program. Forty-three hotels and inns have signed on for the program, according to the department. Among the key standards that will be used to rate hotels are energy efficiency, environmental management, pollution prevention, and resource conservation. The program is the latest in a larger effort under way in New York under the New York State Green Hospitality and Tourism Partnership, a partnership of government, business, and academia.
