The Environmental Protection Agency is considering setting both a short-term exposure limit and a total ceiling limit for a carbon dioxide refrigerant used as a substitute for ozone-depleting substances in vehicle air conditioners (74 Fed. Reg. 47,774).rnIn 2006 EPA proposed listing R-744 (carbon dioxide) as "acceptable with use conditions" as a substitute for a chlorofluorocarbon, CFC-12, in motor vehicle air conditioning under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (71 Fed. Reg. 55,140).rnIn a notice published in the Sept. 17 Federal Register, EPA said it is considering establishing a ceiling limit for carbon dioxide concentrations of 4 percent or 40,000 parts per million that could not be exceeded in the passenger compartment at any time.
