Advocates Urge EPA to Strengthen Proposal to Reduce Ship Emissions

Clean air advocates Aug. 6 urged the Environmental Protection Agency to strengthen its proposed rule to curb pollution from oceangoing ships to target particulates as well as nitrogen oxide emissions.rnWitnesses at an agency public hearing generally applauded the proposed rule to regulate emissions from the largest marine engines-a measure they had sought for years-but said the proposal falls short of what is needed in Southern California.rnThe proposal should limit emissions of fine particulates, which pose the greatest health risks to people living and working in and near the ports, witnesses representing environmental and citizen groups said. It also should establish requirements for ships that are already in use, not just for new marine engines, they said.
