State Seeks Nonattainment Designation For County, Cites Higher Winter Ozone

Unusual wintertime ground-level ozone violations prompted Wyoming March 12 to recommend that an area in the northwestern part of the state be designated as not in attainment with the federal ozone standard.rnGov. Dave Freudenthal (D) said the state is sending a letter to Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson recommending the agency designate Sublette County and a small area southwest of the county as in nonattainment with the agency's eight-hour standard for ground-level ozone, ordinarily a summertime problem in urban areas.rnJohn Corra, director of the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, said the area in question has violated the standard in the past three years, due chiefly to a pronounced increase in natural gas development activities in the region.
