EPA Sends Rule Setting Emission Standard For Renewables to White House for Review

The Environmental Protection Agency Dec. 22 sent to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review a final rule determining what biofuels meet the requirements of the renewable fuels standard.rnThe rule would implement the standard-established under federal energy law-which mandates that renewables produce 20 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline, as measured over the fuel's entire life cycle from production to use.rnHowever, the law also exempts ethanol produced in facilities built or under construction before Dec. 19, 2007, meaning much of the ethanol produced now would not be held to that standard for emissions.rnThe proposed rule announced by EPA May 5 included an analysis strongly criticized by the corn and ethanol industry that determined much of the ethanol produced in the United States would not meet the requirements.
