Democrats Show Near-United Front In Urging Rejection of Policy Riders

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and 182 other Democrats showed a near-united front Nov. 1 in opposing Republican efforts to roll back environmental regulations and other policies by attaching language to fiscal year 2012 appropriations measures. In a letter, the Democrats warned House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to avoid what they called "blatantly partisan" policy riders that House Republicans have sought to attach to various appropriations bills over the past year. In the letter, Democrats warned Republicans against risking "a government shutdown by playing politics" with spending bills that would fund agencies and departments through Sept. 30, 2012.
