Measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions from a company's supply chain can be a tool for businesses to identify waste and inefficiencies in their systems, reporting advocates said during a Nov. 1 panel discussion at the 2011 GreenGov Symposium. "It isn't just for companies to report their emissions, but I think there's a real value in using them to evaluate policies. A life cycle assessment is a very useful tool," said Cynthia Cummis, senior associate for the World Resources Institute's Greenhouse Gas Protocol team. Supply chain emissions, known as Scope 3 emissions, include greenhouse gas emissions from products and services purchased by companies or government agencies or the emissions associated with product use by customers. Scope 1 emissions are those directly emitted by a company, and Scope 2 emissions include energy consumption and emissions from heating and cooling.
