The Environmental Protection Agency needs more detailed and updated guidance documents and management policies to prepare for managing waste from the next big oil spill, according to an EPA inspector general's report released Sept. 27. The inspector general, drawing on the record of BP Pic's Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, said the agency especially should update a 2002 guidance on exemptions provided for oil exploration and production from the hazardous waste regulations of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.
