Gulf of Mexico Spill Cleanup Said to Offer Lessons for Possible Offshore Arctic Drilling

Cleanup failures and successes in the Deepwater Horizon disaster response hold lessons for oil spill prevention and response in the offshore Arctic should drilling and production proceed there, experts said at the 2011 annual meeting of the Pacific States/British Columbia Oil Spill Task Force. The task force was formed in the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez spill as a cooperative group, sharing expertise and, if necessary, equipment. At the annual meeting, held Aug. 24 in Anchorage, officials who co-authored the U.S. Coast Guard's Incident Specific Preparedness Review (ISPR), released in January, discussed their findings.
