The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved legislation June 29 that would extend the Department of Homeland Security's chemical facility antiterrorism program through 2014. The bill (S. 473), sponsored by Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), was passed on an 8-2 vote. The legislation is the same as a bill the committee approved in July 2010, except the extension would continue through 2014 rather than through 2013. Because current regulations expire Oct. 4, 2011, Collins said, it is important that the committee act to continue the program. "This is an example of a law that has worked well. We're not trying to rework the law," she said.
