Court Grants Preliminary Approval of DuPont Settlement in Class Action PFOA Lawsuit

A federal judge in New Jersey on March 22 gave preliminary approval to an $8.3 million settlement between DuPont and Salem County, N.J., residents who claim they were exposed to drinking water contaminated with toxic chemicals discharged from the company's plant in the county (Rowe v. DuPont, D.N.J., No. 06-1810,3/22/11). Judge Renee M. Bumb, of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, granted preliminary approval of the class action settlement. The litigation was filed by residents living near the DuPont Chambers Works who alleged their drinking water had been contaminated with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a substance used to make nonstick and heat-resistant products, notably Teflon® cookware, since the 1950s.
