Draft DOE Study Evaluates Disposal Options For 'Greater-Than-Class C Low-Level Waste

A draft study by the Department of Energy evaluated several options but did not recommend a site or disposal method for the storage of certain types of low-level radioactive waste generated by nuclear power plants, hospitals, universities, industry, and the federal government, according to a notice in the Feb. 25 Federal Register (76 Fed. Reg. 10,574). The draft environmental impact statement assesses the potential human health and environmental impacts of storing "greater-than-Class C" waste and waste with similar characteristics at six Energy Department sites and four generic commercial ones. It also evaluates a "no action alternative," where the waste would continue to be handled where it is currently stored.
