Gov. Brown Names Resources Secretary,Reappoints Nichols as Air Board Chairman

Two days after taking office, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) Jan. 5 named John Laird, a member of the State Assembly from 2002 to 2008, as secretary of the California Resources Agency and reappointed Mary D. Nichols as chair of the California Air Resources Board. Laird's appointment requires Senate confirmation. The Santa Cruz Democrat lost a bid for a state Senate seat last year. After leaving the State Assembly, Laird taught environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Before being elected to the Assembly he served as mayor of Santa Cruz and on the city council.
