Smart Growth Group Pushes for Tax Break To Encourage Cleanup of Blighted Properties

A coalition of state and local organizations to promote smart growth is asking Congress to pass a tax incentive by the end of 2012 to encourage brownfields development, one of its officials told BNA Nov. 19.Section 198 (a) of the Internal Revenue Code allows remediation expenditures at eligible properties to be fully deductible in the year they are incurred, said Katy Hartnett, director of government affairs and outreach for Smart Growth America.
