Groups Ask EPA to Require TRI Reporting For Chemicals in Oil, Gas Extraction Work

Seventeen environmental advocacy groups petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency on Oct. 24 to require Toxics Release Inventory reporting for oil and gas extraction activities. The groups cited air emission data from EPA in support of their request that the agency add the oil and gas extraction industry to the list of industries that must report releases of toxic chemicals under authority of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 (Pub. L. No. 99-499). "EPA recently estimated that oil and gas extraction operations release nearly 130,000 tons of hazardous air pollutants every year, equivalent to thirty percent of the total released by all industries that report their emissions to the Toxics Release Inventory today, and more than any other sector except power plants," the petition said.
