House Subcommittee Approves Bills to Relax Restrictions on Ozone-Depleting Substances

A House subcommittee July 19 approved two draft bills that would relax restrictions on certain ozone-depleting substances. The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power voted 15-6 in favor of legislation that could increase the use of methyl bromide, a fumigant that has been found to deplete the stratospheric ozone layer. The subcommittee also approved on a voice vote a bill that would allow the sale of existing inventories of Primatene® Mist, an over-the-counter epinephrine inhaler that has been unavailable since Jan. 1 as part of a phaseout of products containing ozone-depleting chlo-rofluorocarbons (CFCs).
