Cleanup Backlog for Underground Tanks Decreased as Compliance Rose for 2011

The Environmental Protection Agency reported March 8 that new leaks from underground storage tanks totaled 5,998 in fiscal year 2011, a 6 percent decrease from the fiscal 2010 level.The FY 2011 Annual Report on the Underground Storage Tank Program also showed that the cleanup backlog for tanks fell to a low of just under 88,000 releases since inception of the program in 1985. The cleanup backlog fell from 93,123 in fiscal 2010 to 87,983 in fiscal 2011.EPA fell short of its cleanup goal of 12,250 leaking underground storage tank sites, as cleanup partners reported cleaning up 11,169 sites.
