House Republicans Demand New Details On Project to Install Solyndra Solar Panels

House Republicans said Feb. 17 that they have opened up a new front in their clash with the Obama administration over its handling of clean energy loan guarantees with an inquiry into how a California company got a $1.4 billion award in 2011 to install solar panels built by Solyndra LLC even after questions had been raised about Solyndra's viability. House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), who heads the panel's oversight subcommittee, said in a Feb. 17 announcement that they want to know why the Energy Department gave conditional approval for a $1.4 billion partial loan guarantee for Prologis Inc. of San Francisco in June 2011. At the time, questions were being raised within DOE about Solyndra's survival, according to the two Republicans.
