Three Energy Companies Failing to Disclose Financial Risks of Biomass, Investors Tell SEC

Three energy companies that own and operate some of the largest wood-burning power plants in the United States have failed to disclose the environmental impacts and financial risks of biomass power, a letter filed Nov. 20 with the Securities and Exchange Commission says. The letter, filed by a group of 15 investors representing more than $100 billion, said SEC filings from Dominion Resources Inc., Southern Co., and Covanta Holding Corp. are "incomplete" and "misleading" because they portray biomass energy as carbon neutral without alerting investors to the business threats posed by potential regulation of bioenergy and its carbon dioxide emissions.
