IMO Panel Delays Mandate for Nitrogen Oxide Controls for Ships Off U.S., Canadian Coasts

A committee of the International Mari- time Organization has delayed for five years a requirement for new large ships operating off the coasts of the United States and Canada to control emis- sions of nitrogen oxides, according to a briefing document released May 21. IMO's Marine Environmental Protection Committee, which convened May 13-17, also authorized an update of 2009 estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, took action on transfers of energy efficiency technology, implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention, and energy efficiency requirements for roll-on, roll-off cargo ships-vessels that carry wheeled cargo on board-as well as vehicle carriers.
