AES Corp. to Close Coal-Powered Units, Eyes Natural Gas Units in Ohio, Indiana

An Arlington, Va.-based power company plans to close several coal-fired plants in the Midwest and is considering building additional gas-fired units and switching certain coal plants to gas. AES Corp. will shut down 620 megawatts of coal- and oil-fired units in Indiana and Ohio by April 2016 "as a result of existing and expected environmental regula-tions, including EPA's mercury and air toxics stan-dard," the company said in documents filed May 9 with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
