On an 87-11 vote, the Senate approved April 10 the nomination of Sally Jewell, a business executive, to be the next secretary of interior. Jewell will replace Ken Salazar, the former Colorado senator who has served as interior secretary for the past four years. President Obama said he was pleased with the Senate's vote to approve Jewell, who has been chief executive officer of Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) for several years. She began her career as a petroleum engineer and later worked in banking.
