EPA Reviewing Petition to List Floating 'Pacific Garbage Patch' as Superfund Site

The Environmental Protection Agency told BNA March 28 it is reviewing a petition to list reefs and shores of the northwestern Hawaiian islands and a large mass of plastic debris known as the "Pacific Garbage Patch" as a superfund site.In its December 2012 petition, the Center for Biological Diversity asked EPA to conduct a preliminary assessment of the sites under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act to evaluate any threats to public health and the environment posed by plastic pollution.
