RGGI Auction Price Rises by 45 Percent In First Auction Since Emission Cap Lowered

The clearing price of carbon dioxide emissions allowances jumped significantly in the first auction held by the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative since it announced a tighter emissions cap, RGGI announced March 15. The allowances sold for $2.80 each in the March 13 auction, a 45 percent increase from the selling price in the previous four auctions and $0.82 above the minimum auction price. The latest auction also marked a significant increase in the percentage of allowances purchased, the number of bidders, and the ratio of bids to supply.
