Group Plans to Sue Pennsylvania Contractor Over Alleged violations at Waste Coal Site

An environmental group March 13 threatened to sue a Pennsylvania contractor over alleged air and water pollution violations at a 500-acre waste coal reclamation site in southwestern Pennsylvania where the company disposes of coal ash from nearby power plants. Attorneys from Environmental Integrity Project and Public Justice representing Citizens Coal Council filed a 90-day notice of intent to sue Matt Canestrale Contracting Inc. (MCC), the owner of two vast piles of coal processing waste, known as "gob piles," in La Belle, Pa. The two gob piles contain 40 million tons of refuse, according to the notice letter.
