Enforcement Agenda to Emphasize Major Violators Amid Cuts in Inspections, Cases

The Environmental Protection Agency in 2014 is expected to continue pursuing enforcement actions strategically against major violators of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, while increasingly relying on new technologies to ensure compliance as the agency cuts back on inspections and new cases. The top enforcement officer, Cynthia Giles, told Bloomberg BNA that cases targeting large sources of air pollution such as refineries and coal-fired power plants, air toxics pollution, stormwater pollution and discharges of raw sewage would be among the agency's top priorities this year.
