Commercial clothes washers will be required to use as much as 18 percent less energy under a final Energy Department rule made public Dec. 8. The rule, which goes into effect in January 2018, sets mandatory energy and water usage levels for both top-loading and front-loading clothes washers commonly used in laundromats and apartment buildings.
