EPA Designates Four New Methods for Use In Monitoring Air Pollutant Concentrations

The Environmental Protection Agency has designated four new methods for monitoring the concentrations of ambient air pollutants, including paniculate matter and ozone. The agency, in a notice scheduled for publication in the Federal Register on Nov. 4, said states and other agencies now may use the monitoring methods for determining compliance with the agency's national ambient air quality standards. The EPA designates reference and equivalent monitoring methods to aid states in operating air quality surveillance programs under the Clean Air Act. The new monitoring methods include two reference methods based on commercially available particulate matter samplers developed by Tisch Environmental Inc., an Ohio-based company. One reference method is for manual monitoring of fine particulate matter, while the other is a method for both coarse and fine particu-lates based on a pair of filter samplers developed by Tisch.
