摘要

The United Nations climate accord set to be finalized in Paris in 2015 isn't going to be a "grand comprehensive treaty that will solve climate change forever," the top U.S. climate negotiator said Oct. 16. Todd Stern, the State Department's special envoy for climate change, said, "That's a charade, that doesn't exist." "What we can do is get an agreement that's more ambitious than ever before," one that's "really applicable to all" and one that will be "self-differentiated," he said at an event held by the Brookings Institution. Stern's comments come as negotiators from more than 190 nations gear up for the next round of high-level climate talks to be held Dec. 1-12 in Lima, Peru. The treaty being negotiated would for the first time commit both developed and developing nations to take actions on climate change beginning in 2020.
