Senate Hearing to Examine Diablo Canyon, Other Nuclear Plants Following Earthquake

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) plans an Environment and Public Works Committee oversight hearing on the ability of PG&E Corp.'s Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant and other reactors to withstand seismic activity after a 6.0 magnitude tremor struck northern California, a committee aide said. The planned hearing follows a report in which a former NRC inspector at the 2,300-megawatt power plant urged its shutdown over concerns about whether it could withstand strong shaking from nearby fault lines and wrote in a confidential Nuclear Regulatory Commission report filed in 2013 that the NRC wasn't applying safety rules it set out for the plant's operation.
