USGS Predicts Slightly Larger Dead Zone In Bay Because of Higher Susquehanna Flows

The U.S. Geological Survey forecast that the Chesapeake Bay will have a slightly larger-than-normal hypoxic zone where there is too little oxygen for species to survive this summer. The USGS said in releasing the annual forecast June 24 that the summer "dead zone" will be close to the averages measured since the late 1990s. The news release added that research indicates the low oxygen, "hypoxic," zones are many times larger than prior to the human activity that produced the excessive nutrient pollution.
