$30 Billion in Nuclear Waste Fund Should Go Toward Waste Management, Institute Says

A $30 billion balance collected from nuclear utility consumers should be made available to a new organization to manage and dispose of radioactive waste, the president and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Energy Institute said in a May 16 statement. Marvin Fertel urged policy makers to establish such an organization to effectively implement a spent-fuel management program. In addition to the $30 billion, the organization also should be given access to future ratepayer fees that may be collected, he said. Fertel's remarks came on the heels of a May 9 announcement by the Energy Department that because of a court order, it would stop collecting fees assessed to nuclear utilities and their ratepayers until the government restarts its nuclear waste program. About $30 billion has been collected since the early 1980s.
