State Legislature Sustains Vetoes of Bills On Mineral Mining Rules, Lake Protection

The Maine Legislature failed May 1 to override vetoes of legislation that would have required the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to write new rules to protect the environment during mining, and in another measure, to protect Maine's lakes from phosphorus. One mining-related bill, LD 1772, would have required the state DEP to redraft mining rules, after the Legislature last month rejected their first draft rules.
