A suburban county in Maryland that faces a 2025 deadline for reducing the amount of polluted stormwater flowing from developed land into its waterways is poised to obtain $1,2 billion in private financing for "green infrastructure" retrofits. The initiative, which includes using a local public-private partnership to design, install and maintain rain gardens and other pervious surfaces, would be the first of its kind in the U.S., an Environmental Protection Agency spokesman told Bloomberg BNA Jan. 30. The plan from Prince George's County, a suburb of Washington, D.C., comes as Maryland and the five other states sharing the Chesapeake Bay watershed strive to meet nutrient and sediment reduction mandates imposed by the EPA in 2010. The total maximum daily load program requires the states to have in place by 2025 all infrastructure, policies and practices necessary to reduce nutrient and sediment loading to the bay to sustainable levels, with 60 percent in place by 2017.
