摘要

Global insurance claims from floods, severe storms and other natural disasters in 2013 declined by half from the year before, due in part to a "very quiet" North Atlantic hurricane season, according to estimates from reinsurer Munich Re. In 2013, insured losses from natural catastrophes totaled $31 billion, down from $65 billion in 2012 and below average figures for the past decade, Munich Re said in the estimates released Jan. 7. Overall economic losses from 2013's natural catastrophes, which totaled $125 billion, also were below the 10-year average. Munich Re said the North Atlantic hurricane season, which typically accounts for some of the most expensive natural disasters each year, was especially quiet. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy caused $25 billion in insured losses in the United States and the Caribbean, according to previous Munich Re estimates (44 ER 84, 1/11/13).
