San Diego Sets Renewable Energy, Emissions Targets Under Newly Approved Climate Plan

The San Diego City Council approved a climate plan that Mayor Kevin Faulconer (R) said will make the city, "the green energy and solar capital of the world." The city plans to power its own operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2035 and reduce citywide greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent from 2010 levels by 2020 and by 50 percent in 2035. The plan sets a target for increasing tree canopy from the current 6.5 percent to 35 percent by 2035. It also provides a framework for achieving greenhouse gas emissions targets established by the state's landmark A.B. 32 legislation and related executive orders signed by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and incumbent Gov. Jerry Brown, establishing target years and reduction amounts.
