Refiners Will Have to Blend More Ethanol Under Final EPA Renewable Fuels Rule

More biofuels than initially proposed will be required to be blended into the fuel supply under an Environmental Protection Agency final rule, a decision that means biofuels likely will surpass 10 percent of transportation fuel in 2016. The final rule (RIN 2060-AS22) is expected to increase the amount of biofuels just beyond the "blend wall," or the point where the amount of ethanol that must be blended into gasoline exceeds 10 percent. Most gasoline today is 10 percent ethanol, so higher amounts are expected to require more use of higher blends. The American Petroleum Institute had asked the Obama administration to set the requirement at 9.7 percent of the fuel supply.
