Cutting-edge solar technology holds promise of being a "game changer" for utility-scale electricity storage, a high-ranking official with Nevada's largest utility said June 26. Tony F. Sanchez Ⅲ, senior vice president for NV Energy Inc., told Bloomberg BNA that the 110-megawatt Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is undergoing testing following completion of construction. When it is scheduled to become fully operational Aug. 31, the facility's 10,000 solar panels will focus the sun's energy on a central tower whose core is filled with molten carbonate salt that stores the energy. The place sits halfway between Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe, Nev.
