Sierra Club Says Coal Ash Pits Leaking At Dominion Facility in Southeast Virginia

The Southern Environmental Law Center Dec. 18 notified Dominion Virginia Power that it plans to file a lawsuit under the Clean Water Act to compel the clean up of leaking coal ash pits at a Dominion power plant in southeastern Virginia. The notice of intent filed by SELC, representing the Sierra Club, addresses concerns about the utility's Chesapeake Energy Center in Chesapeake, Va.. According to the environmental groups, coal ash from the aging power plant is deposited in unlined pits that are leaching "high levels" of arsenic, cobalt, sulfide and other dangerous pollutants into groundwater and the southern branch of the Elizabeth River. Dominion is in the process of closing the coal-fired plant and has proposed to the state Department of Environmental Quality that lined caps be placed over the top of pits, according to the notice.
