Energy Department to Dispose of Plutonium From Savannah River Site, Moniz Tells IAEA

The U.S. will dilute and dispose of 6 metric tons of excess plutonium from the Savannah River site, in addition to the 34 tons of surplus plutonium the Energy Department already has committed to eliminate, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said in a speech Dec. 5. "This is yet another tangible commitment by the United States to ensure this material will not be used again in nuclear weapons," Moniz said at the International Atomic Energy Agency conference in Vienna. He said the U.S. was beginning consultations with the IAEA for monitoring and verification.
