Alaska Collects 200 Tons of Marine Debris From 2011 Tsunami in Latest Cleanup

Alaska's Department of Environmental Conservation removed more than 200 tons of marine debris that washed along the state's coastline, much of it linked to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami off the Pacific coast of Japan. Cleanup coordinator Dorothy Melambianakis said items included aluminum water bottles, glass buoys, soccer balls with Japanese writing and shoes. Collected debris also included buoys, fishing lines and nets, large sections of polystyrene foam and Japanese aquaculture floats.
