New Air Monitoring Methods Approved Under Sulfur Dioxide, Particulate Standards

State and local air quality officials have new tools at their disposal to monitor levels of sulfur dioxide and particulate matter. The Environmental Protection Agency, in a notice published July 13, designated a new federal reference method for monitoring sulfur dioxide and four new equivalent methods for measuring particulate matter concentrations. Federal reference methods are considered by the EPA to be the "gold standard" for air monitoring, while equivalent methods are based on different technology but must be just as accurate as the reference methods (81 Fed. Reg. 45,284).
