DOE Adds Bases to Solar Vets Program, Allocates $10M for 10 New Training Projects

The Energy Department said it has added five new military bases to its Solar Ready Vets jobs training program, and is allocating more than $10 million to fund 10 new projects in its Solar Training and Education for Professionals (STEP) program. Both programs are part of the White House's goal of training 75,000 solar workers, including military veterans, by 2020. The goal, announced last April, is an increase from the administration's previous goal of 50,000 workers by 2020 (46 ER 1081, 4/10/15). As part of the initiative, the Energy Department and the Defense Department formed a partnership in April 2015 to train military veterans to enter into the solar energy field, which has to date trained more than 250 veterans in 14 cohorts at five military bases. The five new bases to join the program are Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, Joint Base San Antonio, Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, and Marine Corps Base Hawaii, which brings the total number of military bases participating to 10, the DOE announced May 17.
