Regulatory Control Over Fracking Needs State, Local Balance, NGA Official Says

A fine balance must be struck between local and state regulatory control over hydraulic fracturing and other drilling activities, a National Governors Association official said in reference to a recent Colorado Supreme Court ruling on the subject. "If all the power is at the state level, then local governments don't have a say," Aliza Wasserman, program director of the Environment, Energy, and Transportation Division of the NGA, said May 18. "If all the power is at the local level, then it's going to be very difficult to develop the resource." Wasserman spoke at a workshop titled "How Oil and Gas Development Impacts Local Governments and Communities" and co-hosted by Resources for the Future and Duke University.
